The Blue Mountains is home to a great many forms of wildlife. The one thing the mountains has allot of is Eucalyptus trees and this is something mountains wildlife just loves. A great many of our abundant bird life reside and journey amongst the eucalyptus trees throughout day & night. Late last year when I was hiking with a friend I came across an interesting sight. Perched halfway up a tree was a Goanna clinging desperately with their prehistoric claws to the tree. Now just what he was doing up their I can only speculate, stealing eggs, eating newborns, I’m just not sure. One thing for sure though, he was trespassing and that just wasn’t OK with the Magpie who’s home it was. I then spent the next 30 minutes watching this Goanna getting severely divebombed from all sides.
You generally don’t have to go too far off the beaten track to find some form of wildlife in Australia. Sometimes they are quite happen to stay on the beaten track, this fella was. One of my favourite birds in this area has always been the sulphur crested Cockatoo also seen in the above image. There is something a little comical with these inquisitive guys. I was watching some recently in a group, making a ridiculous amount of noise, and I couldn’t help but laugh at the different expressions that were made during the encounter, they really do have a great personality.
So when you are next out wandering in the bush or your backyard, take a moment and appreciate some of the beautiful wildlife in your area……….it’s so worth it.
